Charles C. Gillispie is professor emeritus of history of science@Princeton University. He was awarded the Balzan Prize in history and philosophy of science in 1997. His most recent book is Pierre-Simon Laplace, 1749 - 1827, A Life in Exact Science (Princeton University Press, 1997).
