According to Roland Kays, our use of the internet to link datasets and process new information in real time has revolutionized the way humans navigate, do business, and find love. Now, he says, the Internet of Animals is extending information sharing beyond humans, to include animal life. As Kays, a zoologist with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and North Carolina State University, described in a talk on May 31, 2023, these combined real-time datasets on animals around the world have enabled a novel, emergent understanding of the needs and requirements of animals. At the same time, he says, this knowledge provides important guidance for humans to sustainably coexist with wild animals. A video of Kays' talk is below, followed by highlights of the talk in the form of live-tweeting from Science Communicators of North Carolina's intern Kirsten Giesbrecht.
