John Moore

John H. Moore Grove City College, Sigma Xi President 1998-99 President of Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania, John Moore served as 1998-99 president of Sigma Xi. A former deputy director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), he is also a former Distinguished Service Professor of International Science and Technology Policy@George Mason University. He currently serves on Sigma Xi's executive committee. Moore received his B.S.E. and M.B.A degrees from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. in economics in 1966 from the University of Virginia. His career began in 1959 as a research chemist for the Procter & Gamble Company. He began his academic career@the University of Virginia, where he taught until 1977. While there, he developed research interests in the economic systems of the former Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. He has also taught@the University of Miami (Florida), Emory University and Stanford University, where he was associate director of the Hoover Institution. In 1983, he was appointed to the National Science Board and served until his appointment in 1985 as NSF deputy director. Moore left the NSF in 1989 to found an International Institute@George Mason University. He was appointed president of Grove City College in May 1996. A recipient of the NSF's Distinguished Public Service Award, he serves on National Research Council committees and on the board of directors of the Civilian Research and Development Foundation.
