From ephyra to adult medusa, sea nettles undergo six stages of development. Their life span is unknown.

Sea nettles can float or remain sessile. But observations in nature indicate that sea nettles spend between 90% and 100% of the day actively swimming. They tend to swim against the current, which contributes to their colonial groupings, and reside in the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and western Pacific Ocean.
