David Vandermast is an assistant professor in the Department of Biology at Elon University at Elon, North Carolina. He has studied the importance of the American chestnut in southern Appalachian forests before the blight. His current research examines successional dynamics in beech forests, which are currently being decimated by yet another introduced fungal pathogen.
