This parasitic plant is non-photosynthetic and completely dependent on a host. Haustoria (suckerlike appendages) insert themselves into the vascular system of the host. The leafless, threadlike stems of C. europaea entwine themselves around host plants. When it attaches to another plant, it ceases to have any connection with the ground. Small flowers are aggregated in spherical, spreading inflorescences.
