When 19th-century homesteaders arrived on the Great American Prairie, they built homes with the only construction material widely available: sod. These earthwork mounds with living plants on the roofs sheltered settlers from wind and temperature extremes, while providing grazing for farm animals. Similar dwellings served people in Nordic countries for centuries (see image below).
