To the Editors:

An interesting side note to Henry Petroski’s column “The Bridge That United Two Cities” (Engineering, January–February) about the Chain Bridge in Budapest has to do with the tunnel under the Buda hills at the end of the bridge. The locals refer to the tunnel as the “garage” the bridge is moved into when it rains. They are about the same length.
