Senior Writer Brian Hayes writes the "Computing Science" column for American Scientist. He has written similar columns for Scientific American, for Computer Language and for The Sciences. Mr. Hayes was an editor on the staff of Scientific American from 1972 until 1984 and was editor of American Scientist from 1990 to 1992. His most recent book is Group Theory in the Bedroom, and Other Mathematical Diversions (Hill and Wang, 2008). He is the author of Infrastructure: A Field Guide to the Industrial Landscape (W. W.
