Senior Writer Brian Hayes writes the "Computing
Science" column for American Scientist. He has
written similar columns for Scientific American,
for Computer Language and for The
Sciences. Mr. Hayes was an editor on the staff of
Scientific American from 1972 until 1984 and
was editor of American Scientist from 1990 to 1992. His
most recent book is Group Theory in the Bedroom, and Other
Mathematical Diversions (Hill and Wang, 2008). He is
the author of Infrastructure: A Field Guide to the
Industrial Landscape (W. W. Norton, 2005); the book
has its own web site. He also
writes a weblog called bit-player, which covers much
the same territory as the "Computing Science"
column.
