'Planets Are the Rule Rather Than the Exception'
Each of the 100 billion stars in the Milky Way probably has at least one companion planet, scientists said last week, adding credence to the notion that planets are extremely common in the cosmos.
In other space news, astronomers have spotted the largest distant galaxy cluster using a telescope in Chile. Galaxy clusters are the largest stable structures in our universe.
Researchers released the biggest images yet detailing dark matter. Each image, a billion light-years across, shows vast dark matter clumps and voids scattered through the cosmos. The team from the Canada-France Hawaii Telescope inferred the dark matter's existence by the way it bends light. The images were presented at the 219th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Austin, Texas.
