Looking Back on Global Ozone and the CFC Ban
National Geographic revisited what many consider an environmental triumph -- the international ban of chlorofluorocarbons in the 1980s that were shown to damage the Earth's protective ozone layer. Some scientists today say that closing the hole in the ozone over the Antarctic could have a troubling side effect.
The largest-ever study of tornadoes was launched last week. More than 100 researchers are fanning out across the U.S. Great Plains to monitor atmospheric conditions in the VORTEX2 (Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment 2) project, which runs from May 1 to June 15.
A study in the U.K. found that it now takes British fishing boats almost 20 times the effort to catch the same about of fish that were caught at the end of the 19th century. And in the U.S., commercial fishermen in New England fear that new regulations designed to revive cod and flounder populations will force them out of business.
