Human-Animal Connection 'Very Deep and Very Old'

Researchers say that having animals as pets may have helped shape human evolution, including the development of language and tool-making. This "animal connection" compelled humans to learn about and care for fellow creatures.

In other news of the ancient past, scientists have determined that, millions of years ago, a number of deadly viruses integrated themselves into the DNA of a wide range of animals, including humans, zebrafish and other vertebrates.

And anthropologists say that discoveries at an archaeological site in New Jersey that was home for a community of free blacks 200 years ago could help rewrite African-American history.
