Gulf Oil Spill: Bonnie Halts Cleanup Efforts

Tropical Storm Bonnie put a temporary stop to oil spill cleanup efforts in the Gulf of Mexico last week. Meanwhile, it was revealed that workers on the doomed oil rig had expressed concerns about safety weeks before it exploded.

In the context of the crisis, the New York Times explored the accepted maxim among engineers that more is learned from disasters than successes. And another report looked at the lingering effects of oil spills that occurred years ago in Alaska and France.

The Los Angeles Times reported on an oil spill invention developed by an inveterate tinkerer and also featured the work of a team of sensory experts who sniff out oil in snapper, tuna and other seafood.
