A report by the National Research Council last week warned that not only is global warming real, but the effects are already serious and the need has become "pressing" for a strong national policy to limit emissions of greenhouse gases.
Facing an avalanche of petitions and lawsuits over proposed endangered species designations, the U.S. Interior Department said last week that it had negotiated a settlement under which it will make decisions on 251 species over the next six years.
In other environmental news, researchers said an explosion in the population of the predatory lionfish in Caribbean waters, where it has no natural predators, is posing a widespread threat to marine wildlife.
And shale gas drilling operations increase the risk of nearby drinking water becoming contaminated with methane, a study has suggested.
