Mechanical Drawing
To the Editors:
I was interested to read the report on the artist Alexander Calder’s engineering background in Henry Petroski’s Engineering column “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Engineer” in the September–October 2012 issue. I was intrigued by the described studies of “orthogonal projection” by engineering students in the 1910s. I remain glad that such “mechanical drawing,” including top, front, and side views, was one of my courses at the Bronx High School of Science in 1957. Further, my mechanical drawing of a telescope mount was a main part of my science fair project that, I am sure, got me into college (Harvard) and resulted in my current career.
