With world population and wealth on the rise, the use of motorized transportation will expand globally. Since transportation already is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, this growth has serious implications for climate change. Understanding the history of transportation use gives insights into which fuels, technologies and public policies may best control emissions from this vital sector of the world economy.
