In 1986, as Sigma Xi was celebrating its centennial, Branscomb created a piece of true science fiction—a vision of science in 2006. He predicted that rapid advances in computer and genetic technology and the growth of the Internet, replacing paper with electronic communication, would propel science and engineering rapidly forward. On the occasion of the launch of American Scientist Online, he revises his view of what 2006 will bring, particularly with respect to scientific culture and technology-driven interactions between science and society.
