In Defense of Pure Mathematics

After 75 years, Godfrey Harold Hardy’s A Mathematician’s Apology still fuels debate over pure versus applied mathematics.

The book has been described as the most accessible description of the world of mathematics. The author describes reasons for the book’s resurgence and staying power, and how current changes in the world of mathematics are reflected in some of Hardy’s prescient statements.
