Archaeology sheds new light on cities in the era of the Atlantic slave trade

Landscape archeology is enriching understanding of how communities, including urban centers, were organized on the coast of West Africa during the era of the slave trade. Recent research is developing a sharper picture of indigenous trade, the values of the elite classes and power relationships in the region. J. Cameron Monroe of the University of California, Santa Cruz, is leading one such effort in the Abomey Plateau, once part of the kingdom of Dahomey.
