Measuring Success in Conservation
Assessing efforts to restore populations of marine mammals is partly a matter of epistemology: How do you know when enough is enough?

Many whale species have been hunted to near extinction, and only in the past few decades have conservation biologists made any kind of effort to rescue them from disappearing. The authors argue that now, after so many years of rescue efforts, biologists need to develop some quantitative criteria for assessing conservation programs to determine whether they are working.
