Philip A. Rea

Biography

Philip A. Rea is professor of biology at the University of Pennsylvania and serves as a faculty director of the Roy and Diana Vagelos Program in Life Sciences and Management, which is a joint effort between Penn's School of Arts and Sciences and the Wharton School. He earned a D.Phil. in plant biochemistry from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. He approaches his primary research on energy-dependent transport across membranes and heavy-metal detoxification as a "basic biologist," who seeks general principles of biology, particularly at the cellular and molecular levels. As a secondary area of research, Rea studies the interface between the life sciences and their implementation through case studies that highlight the difficult transition from discovery in the laboratory to success in the market. He is the author of more than 100 papers, and was awarded the President’s Medal of the Society for Experimental Biology for his fundamental research, as well as several awards for his teaching.
