Miguel Nicolelis

Biography

Miguel Nicolelis is a professor of neurobiology, biomedical engineering and e=psychological and brain sciences, and co-director of the Center for Neuroengineering at Duke University. He is Co-Founder and Scientific Director of the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute for Neuroscience of Natal. He received his M.D. from the University of Sao Paulo Medical School in 1984 and hi  Ph.D. from the Institute of Biomedical Science at the University of Sao Paulo in 1989. Although he is best known for his pioneering studies of brain-machine interfaces and neuroprosthetics in human patients and non-human primates, he has also developed an integrative approach to studying neurological and psychiatric disorders including Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, schizophrenia and attention deficit disorder. He is a member of the French Academy of Science and the Brazilian Academy of Science, has authored over 180 manuscripts, and has edited numerous books and special journal issues.
