Mary V. Ashley is an associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she and her students use molecular genetic approaches to study ecological and evolutionary processes in a wide range of organsims. She received her undergraduate degree from Kenyon College and her doctoral degree from the University of California, San Diego. An important aspect of her work is to apply molecular genetics to the study of threatened species in ways that may aid their conservation and management.
